Alumni Awards 2016
The Venice High School Alumni Association congratulates the 2015 Alumni Award Recipients for their service to Venice High School and the surrounding community.
Congratulations to This Years Recipients!
Tom Yoshikawa (S‘58) & Coach Vidal Sandoval (‘79) were honored by the Alumni
Association, their family and friends at a luncheon in November.
Held in the private patio of the C&O Cucina (formerly the Black Whale) on Washington Blvd. the event was a full house. Family and Venetians of all ages came to mix and mingle as we gave homage to these two great Honorees. Master of Ceremonies Laura Ferre (past Alumni president and current director of the Alumni House) did a superb job with all the introductions, anecdotes and even a “pop quiz” about the Honorees Tom & Vidal.
Jim Blackwood presented Tom with the honoree plaque after entertaining everyone with tales of the shenanigans they pulled off as kids and, of course, recounted his many adulthood accomplishments.
Tom then introduced his family and the pride in them showed. He talked about his growing up in Venice, working on the family farm and his desire to play football on the VHS team.
Next was a heartwarming presentation to Coach Sandoval by 6 past and present students. Each recounting how his role as teacher and/or coach impacted them. The main thread throughout each speech was that Vidal was more than just a coach, that being on his track/cross country team was more of a family, where he was taskmaster but also someone who could bring out their best. To hear the heartfelt comments from these bright, young men and woman shows that Mr. Sandoval has indeed, made a great impact on many lives in his 16 years at Venice High.
Vidal accepted his award with all the pride one could have from hearing all those comments and anecdotes. He recounted his own experiences as a kid from Venice and his years as a student at Venice High. Amazing as it sounds, he was introduced to cross country running by a cousin when he was 12 years old and when he got into VHS he joined the track team. Upon graduation his dream was to someday be the coach at Venice.
He also recounted how he was mentored by Coach Kampmann and the impact that that man had on his life. So now Coach Sandoval just wants to keep paying it forward.
Both of these men, Tom and Vidal, are truly deserving of the honor to be this year’s Alumni of the Year.
A big thank you goes also to Diane Arnold (‘75) for being luncheon chair.
